How Clover processing fees work in Canada.
Every card transaction in Canada is made up of three costs: the interchange fee set by the card networks (Visa, Mastercard, Interac), the card brand's assessment fee, and the markup your payment provider charges on top. The first two are the same for every provider — the markup is where your rate is really set.
Interchange (the true cost)
Set by the card networks and identical no matter who you process with. It varies by card type — a basic Interac debit tap costs far less than a premium rewards credit card.
Flat-rate pricing
One blended rate for every transaction. Simple to read, but you pay the same markup on cheap debit taps as on expensive credit cards — the provider keeps the difference.
Interchange + (what we offer)
You pay the true interchange cost plus a fixed, disclosed merchant rate. Cheap transactions cost less, expensive ones cost more — and you can see exactly what you paid and why.
